Key identification features
- Small fan with few branches.
- Up to 200mm high, usually 70 to 100 mm .
- White/grey variety found in Scotland.
Habitat
- Found on rocks and boulders from depths of 18-60 m.
- Often found in groups.
- Occurs in moderate tidal streams away from high wave action, for example at the mouths of sea lochs.
- Present further south of the British Isles but only in very deep cold water.
Species facts
- Pink variety recorded in Norway.
- Population may decline in Scotland with warmer seas.
- Host for the rare sea fan anemone, Amphianthus dohrnii.
- Long lived and slow growing.
